Exercise should be invigorating, challenging, and rewarding. Regular physical activity increases your health, can provide you with greater longevity, and increase your happiness — the benefits are indisputable, considering decades of proof and decades of pointed studies. However, no matter the payoff of fitness, health, and happiness, exercise still comes with its own array of issues that can dampen one’s motivation to exercise all too easily.
Oftentimes, this lack of motivation stems from reaching a performance plateau. You know when you’ve hit the gym for a solid month and you feel like the weight you’re able to lift has not changed? Or when you’ve biked so many miles and so many times that you feel like you couldn’t possibly push yourself any harder? It’s like that — and we’ve been there.
Other times, what’s killing your drive to exercise comes from the simplest issue: it gets to be so mundane. When it’s just you, the water, and the lane dividers, there’s only so much serenity one can suffer before you’re counting strokes, bored to tears and accompanied only by the cold sound of water splashing in your ears. The same goes for running, lifting, and everything in between. For the frequent and especially dedicated athlete, the boredom of pushing the same routine day in and day out can seem unavoidable. Whether it’s climbing, biking, kayaking, walking, racing, swimming, rowing, or just about anything else-ing, even generally stimulating activities can get unbearably boring. Luckily, there is a solution: The Delphin. The Delphin enables anybody and everybody to select music to enhance their once dull workout, no matter the activity.
Thanks to various studies, we know that music can play a significant role in improving your athletic performance in both alleviating your boredom and increasing your endurance, and The Delphin provides a way to listen to music no matter what it is that you’re doing. Music that is motivational or synchronized with your exercise is shown to have physical and psychological effects. When a song has a strong, steady beat, for example, you can pedal or run to the beat of the music, which tends to feel satisfying. This may inspire you to exercise more. For example, a study showed that during repetitive, endurance-type activities like running, biking, etc., motivational and stimulative music improved the experience of the majority of participants. Participants in this study reported that they didn’t notice the amount of effort they were exerting and that their energy was improved. The combination of these things led to “higher than expected levels of endurance, power, productivity, or strength.”
Picking music that you enjoy and that suits your routine can help you get more out of your experience. When you’re choosing music to listen to while you exercise, keep in mind the tempo as well as choosing music that you enjoy listening to. A 2010 study led by sport psychologist C.I. Karageorghis states that music can improve athletic performance in two ways: it can either delay fatigue or increase work capacity. By keeping the tempo up, your speed is more likely to increase by regulating and maintaining a pace and regimen. Additionally, music distracts from pain endured during exercise through what’s called competing sensory stimuli, which essentially means it is easier to forget about pain or fatigue when a song you enjoy is distracting you. Additionally, if you particularly enjoy the music you’re listening to, extra endorphins are released, acting like little cheerleaders egging your body to continue exercising.
