Water aerobics is an amazing option for exercise that is becoming more and more popular.
Here are some of the benefits:
Rehab for Injuries
Have you recently had surgery on a joint or limb? Are you looking for a good way to continue to stay fit and rehabilitate your injury without stressing your body further?
Water aerobics may be your answer! It is shown to help orthopedic surgery patients have an “increase in strength and decrease their recovery time.”
Incognito
Are you afraid to go to the big glass room where people do traditional group fitness classes? Ya know… the room where everyone can see if you mess up?
There are a lot of crazy moves to follow and it’s hard to learn them all on the spot. If you find this intimidating, water aerobics may be a nicer option.
When your body is covered mostly in water, there is a bit more privacy. You can mess up and nobody will even know.
Strength
It is easier to build muscle strength in the water because “when exercising in water, you work against 12 times the resistance of air.”
The added resistance makes this exercise way more efficient in building strength.
Not to mention, there is a lot of creative movements in water aerobics that hit all the major muscle groups in a variety of ways.
For instance, there is a lot of vertical movement. “Unlike swimming, vertical exercise seeks to maximize resistance, which results in a core challenge.”
LOW IMPACT
If you have back issues, knee problems, foot or leg injuries, arthritis, or a pregnant belly, swimming will feel more comfortable than a variety of other sports.
The answer is all in the level of impact. “Exercising in water makes you feel about 90 percent lighter, reports the American Council on Exercise.”
When your body makes a quick movement in the water, your body doesn’t feel the same shock to the joints. It’s not as jolting in the water. Everything is kind of muted.
Bring Your Waterproof iPod
Once you’ve been to a few classes, you can go to the pool on your own and bring your choice of music. That’s what my wife does!
She knows a lot of the moves by heart.
So, she brings her Underwater Audio Waterproof iPod Shuffle, and has her own private workout.
