Shaving Vs. Waxing: What's Better for Swimming?

Waxing is a hair removal method that has been used for ages. As a swimmer yourself, you are probably quite familiar with the concept that hair removal is supposed to help with your swim. Whether it’s actual physics or just the placebo effect, it seems to make people swim faster.

However, most swimmers I know use shaving as their primary hair removal method. So, let's dive into the topic of waxing and the pros and cons of using this method as a swimmer.

Pros and Cons of Waxing for Swimmers

First of all, let’s talk about the cons of waxing. Waxing is initially more expensive than shaving, especially if you see a professional (which is highly recommended for best results). Waxing is also more painful than shaving.

But it is definitely one of those things that is easier each time you do it. Also, it is less painful if you see a professional because they have the best technique for the job. They use wax at the perfect temperature. Which brings us to the pros of waxing.

When the ideal wax temperature is used, burns are prevented and there are other benefits too. Your pores slowly open during the process. This lessens skin aggravation and the potential for ingrown hairs. Proper technique uses a cooling agent after as well to close pores.

Although wearing tight swimsuits right after does increase the likelihood of ingrown hairs, the same remains true for the shaving method. Actually, you are more likely to get ingrown hairs with the shaving method. It's a risk either way, but more so with shaving. Another benefit is the hair doesn’t grow back for a long time. So it's a much more long-term hair removal method.

Next, let’s talk about the cons of shaving. As we already mentioned, there is an increased risk for ingrown hairs with shaving. This is because hairs are trimmed just at skin surface level instead of removed at the root.

There is more potential for friction and irritation. Also, you have to shave way more often than you have to wax. If your hair grows fast, we’re talking daily maintainence.

Pros of shaving are that it is super cheap compared to waxing. It is especially cheaper than waxing if you use bargain brand razors in bulk. These brands are way lower quality but that’s another subject.

At the end of the day, it’s your decisions which method works best for you. Good luck with your hair removal endeavors!

After you are done taking care of your hair removal needs, you are probably super stoked to hit the pool as soon as possible.

I know I love that slick smooth, frictionless feeling as I dive into the pool. Before you leave, make sure to bring your Underwater Audio Waterproof iPod Shuffle with you.

Give your ears a little something for entertainment while you are there! It’ll help you swim faster and workout longer. The music is really helpful in motivating longer swims.
