It’s the perpetual struggle of swimmers everywhere. We love the feeling of gliding through the water, lap after lap. We love swimming the morning away while relaxing to our favorite playlist on the Waterproof iPod Shuffle. But we HATE reeking of chlorine for the entire day!
So, the aim of this blog is to find an effective method of removing the chlorine and chloramines from your skin after swimming (which are the foul smelling culprits). Here are some tips you can try:
Don’t be scared by the word “acid”. I’m not talking about hydrochloric acid or anything insane. This will not harm your skin. We’re talking about citric acid (a.k.a. citrus fruit).
Try squeezing a lemon or an orange and diluting it with 50% water. You may even be able to pull off 75% water with the lemon.
Next, put this all over your body and let it dry. In theory, the acid will “eat” away the chlorine. Then shower (using hot water) because you will feel like a sticky fruit.
This is essentially the same method as the lemon or orange technique but you are using white vinegar instead.
Dilute the white vinegar (1 part vinegar to 5 parts water). Next, put this all over your body and let it sit for a couple minutes. Then shower (using hot water) because you will feel like a salad dressing.
The key ingredient here is “ascorbic acid.” That’s what removes the chlorine.
Here’s how you can apply it to your skin: pick up some vitamin C crystals (or vitamin C cream would work too, I guess) from the natural grocery store or buy them on amazon.com.
Then, add water to the crystals to dilute/dissolve and coat your body with this solution. Let it dry and wait a couple minutes. Then, take a hot shower to rinse off.
