Underwater Audio's Guide To OverDrive

This guide is for Delphin users.

Things you will need to follow this guide:

  • A strong WiFi connection
  • A Delphin Micro Tablet
  • An OverDrive account. This link will take you to OverDrive’s website for signing up for an account (US users).
  • An Amazon account, or a way of downloading the OverDrive apk without the Amazon Appstore installed on your Delphin.

*Unfortunately, Libby is not currently a compatible app with the Delphin*


Big hint! If you are already past the initial Delphin set-up process: To make setting up and installing anything on your Delphin easier, from the front screen, swipe up for more options. Go to Settings > Display > Sleep and choose a longer time, like 10 minutes, to keep the screen from going dark too quickly. Just remember after you have finished setting up to go back and turn the screen down to a lower time. The two fastest ways to drain the battery on your Delphin are keeping the display screen on and being connected to WiFi. Keep the screen off whenever it is not in use and turn off the WiFi any time you are not actively using it to keep your battery running for the longest time.

WiFi is required:

While making any changes to your OverDrive library or while downloading your audiobooks, you must be connected to a strong WiFi connection. We recommend being as physically close to your WiFi router as possible.

At least once a month, you will need to reconnect your Delphin to the internet to allow OverDrive to verify that your account is active. This will still matter even if you use your OverDrive account on your phone or computer. The Delphin player has to be reconnected once a month to the internet so that any paid subscription apps (Spotify, Pandora, etc.) can verify for billing purposes. We know that OverDrive is not a paid subscription, but they still seem to follow the same rules as other subscription apps.

While swimming, you will want your WiFi turned off. Water and WiFi do not mix, so even if the pool you swim at offers free WiFi to guests, your Delphin will not be able to work while in the water. The easiest way to do this is to go to Settings > Network > and check the Airplane Mode box. (When you need to reconnect your Delphin to the internet, these are the same steps, just make sure the box is NOT checked.)

To start you will need an OverDrive account. If you do not have one already, we recommend setting up an account on either your Computer or Phone to have an easier time with your keyboard and screen size. (You are not required to connect your Delphin to your phone, that is optional!)

Download OverDrive onto your Delphin

If you have already set-up your Delphin and want to add a new app:

Open the ‘Help’ app which came preinstalled on your Delphin. Scroll until you see ‘Install Apps’ and click on it. Open the Amazon Appstore and search for OverDrive. Click on the app and download it.

Are you going to be using OverDrive frequently? We recommend making it one of your Favorite Apps so it will be on the front screen of your Delphin. On your front screen, decide which of the four apps you would like to replace with OverDrive. Press and Hold that app for a few seconds until a screen pops up showing all of your apps. Scroll down until you see OverDrive and select it. This will make OverDrive appear on your front screen.

Sign into OverDrive on your Delphin

We strongly recommend the Remote Connect app for setting up OverDrive. See section below.

Open the OverDrive app.

This process is very similar to signing into any account, just type your username and password when prompted.

Your sign in information may be your library card number and pin. We were told that often your pin number is just the last four digits of your library card, but this varies from library to library.

Once you are in the app you may download audiobooks, or use any of the other features of the OverDrive app.

Using Remote Connect to aid in setup

Remote Connect is an awesome tool which enables you to control your Delphin using the full screen height of your smart phone. This companion app is completely optional, but it is incredibly useful for setting up apps, like Audible which has a particularly small viewport on the Delphin. The OverDrive app has more screen room to work with than Audible, but Remote Connect is still very helpful in our opinion.

Notice the expanded OverDrive viewing screen when using Fullscreen mode on Remote Connect. This expanded view makes managing your titles significantly easier.

Download offline audiobooks for the pool

Pro tip! Make sure you are filtering your library for audiobooks only. Downloading regular books onto the Delphin will not allow you to listen to them in the pool.

After opening OverDrive, you should see an option to “Add a Title”. Click on the Plus (+) and scroll through audiobooks or search for a title to borrow it. When you find an audiobook you would like to check out, just click the green borrow button. It will prompt you to select the number of days you want to borrow the book for, and to confirm to borrow it. Then you will need to click “Download MP3 Audiobook”.

After your download is complete, we need to verify that your offline audiobook is working properly.

First hit the menu icon in the top left (≡) and select ‘Bookshelf’. Check to make sure your title appears there. If it does, great! Move on to the next step. If it does not, go back to the library and try to download it again.

To be sure that your audiobook is working without the internet, you'll need to turn off your Delphin's WiFi. To do this, hit the back arrow button on the side of your Delphin until you have returned to the home screen. Go to Settings > Network > Airplane Mode. This will toggle your WiFi off. To enable WiFi, follow the same steps above.

Now it's time to check to see if our audiobook is working. Go back to the Delphin's home screen and select OverDrive from your home screen apps, or by swiping up on the arrow and scrolling until you find OverDrive. Within OverDrive, find your audiobook and try to play it (you just need to click on the title). If it works, you have successfully downloaded your audiobook! To add more audiobooks, simply turn off Airplane mode and repeat.

Remove downloaded audiobooks from your Delphin

Do you want to swap out an old audiobook for a new one? You will need to be connected to WiFi to return books.

On your Delphin, open OverDrive. The top-left icon of three stacked lines (≡) will take you to a menu. Choose ‘Bookshelf’ from the list. Scroll to find the audiobook that you would like to remove and just to the right of the title, select the three-dot menu () and click ‘Return to Library’. (The dots are a light grey color and tiny on Delphin screen. They do not have great contrast to be able to easily see. We are sorry about that, but it is an issue inside the OverDrive app and we are unable to change that feature for you!)

It will ask you to confirm that you are returning the title to the library which will delete it from the Delphin for you. Select ‘Yes’.

Other tips & considerations

Your Delphin runs a full version of the OverDrive app. As long as it is connected to WiFi you can use all of the same features as your phone or computer... but due to the screen and keyboard size, you may have an easier time setting up your library on a larger device then simply following the steps above to download the audiobooks to your Delphin for offline listening.

One way to save audiobooks from your computer or phone accounts and make them easier to find on the Delphin is to bookmark the titles to add them to your wish list. When you see a title, at the bottom there is the option to ‘Borrow’ or to the right of it, a plus sign in a bookmark icon (+). Click on the plus to add it to your wish list.

On your Delphin, click on ‘Add a Title’ to open the library. In the library, on the top right of the screen there should be a bell icon, a stack of books, and three stacked lines (≡). Click on the middle icon (stack of books) and select wish list, your bookmarked titles should appear here for easier finding and downloading. Just select borrow to download a title from your wish list.  

If you are on your computer or phone and download books or change anything else you will need to download it onto your Delphin by reconnecting to WiFi and following the steps above or it will not be there the next time you swim or go offline.

Does your downloaded content seem to be missing?

OverDrive says they will automatically return books once they have reached their return date.

We have been told that OverDrive may remove your downloaded content if you go beyond 30 days without going online with the Delphin, but we have not seen this issue yet. Usually the app will just stop working altogether but will begin working again once you go online with the Delphin. If your downloads do appear to be missing, simply reconnect the Delphin to WiFi and download your audiobooks again if they are still available to you to download.

Do you have a completely unknown issue not fixed by anything above?

The first thing OverDrive and Underwater Audio will recommend is uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Since it is a subscription/sign-in app, you should not lose all your books from your account. Uninstalling the app will remove your downloaded content from the Delphin. You will simply have to sign in again once it is reinstalled. You will also need to re-download your audiobooks while connected to WiFi before you will be able to swim with them again offline.

To uninstall an app: Go to Settings > Uninstall Applications > OverDrive > OK

We recommend rebooting the Delphin between uninstalling and reinstalling an app. Just power off the Delphin and power it back on again.

To reinstall OverDrive: Go to Help > Install Apps > Amazon Appstore. Search for OverDrive > Download
