Imagine this: You are at the gym. You are swimming laps and listening to your favorite new song on your trusty Underwater Audio Waterproof iPod Shuffle. You are having a great time.
Then you start to feel slightly uncomfortable. Your swimsuit is starting to rub you the wrong way. In a few minutes, what used to be slightly uncomfortable becomes unbearable. You have to stop your swim early.
You have become another victim of swimsuit chafing. But how do you prevent this from ever happening again? Here is how:
Stay Hydrated & Keep Your Suit Clean
Who knew that you are more prone to chafing if you are dehydrated? Not me. It has to do with the ability to sweat.
The more hydrated you are, the more you can sweat. The more you can sweat, the more protection you will have from chafing. However, there is a catch.
“Avoid sweat from sitting on your skin and forming salt crystals because this makes chafing more likely.”
The longer sweat, dirt or any debris sit on your skin, the more friction there is that can cause irritation. This is why it’s also important to keep your suit clean. So, the moral of the story is that you shouldn’t stay in your suit too long after your swim. Get into a fresh change of clothes.
Wear Chafing Prevention Products
Yes, these exist! You can apparently get them over the counter. Which is news to me. I love what you can find out through a little research.
“When applied to your skin, these products form a barrier that protects you from skin-to-skin and skin-to-fabric chafing.”
So, if you find yourself at the drug store and want to pick up one of these products, it may be a good idea. Whatever works.
Wear a swimsuit that fits
Basically it comes down to this: your suit must fit well.
If it is too loose, you will chafe. If it is too tight, you will chafe.
It needs to fit snug, but not tight. That’s what it all boils down to.
