Here are a few things I’ve learned being married to a swimmer:
LET HER EAT FIRST
Often, I’m excited to talk to my wife after she gets back from a long swim. I find myself eager to ask her a million questions just as she gets through the door.
Over time, I’ve realized that upon her return from a vigorous swim, she is usually famished. We have a word for the accompanying mood this produces. It’s called “hangry.”
That’s what it’s called when you are acting grumpy or angry but the only reason why is because you are actually extremely hungry. “Hangry”ness can be cured by eating something promptly. So, I have learned to just let her eat first-questions can wait till later.
WILLINGNESS TO GIVE MASSAGES WILL EARN YOU MUCHO BROWNIE POINTS
She is ALWAYS sore. And she ALWAYS wants a massage. Whether she requests one or not. Eventually, I learned that if I offered the massages on a regular basis instead of waiting to be asked, I earned more brownie points. It’s a good strategy.
THE NAME OF HER PERFUME IS “CHLORINE“
Sometimes even after she has taken a shower, she still has a faint “pool water” aroma.
It lingers in her car and on her belongings. I’ve learned to find it endearing. It’s a reminder of the activity she loves…the activity that makes her so happy.
SHE MAY PASS OUT DURING DATE NIGHT
If she trained hard that day, the odds of her making it through the entire movie that we don’t start watching till 9pm are slim to none. If I expect this in advance, it’s easier not to get offended.
SHE WILL BE BUFF
I think this is an attractive feature. Swimming totally tones her entire body. This is awesome because I know that swimming makes her happy AND healthy. What more could you want for the person you love?
NEED A GIFT FOR YOUR SPOUSE?
Ever heard of Underwater Audio? They have a Waterproof iPod Shuffle that makes it possible to listen to music in the pool! It’s a perfect gift if your spouse swims. Take my word for it.
